Side table vs end table is mostly a naming difference — but there is a real distinction underneath it, and it is about where the piece sits rather than what it is called.
Retailers use the two words interchangeably. The sizes they attach to each are not interchangeable.
An end table is the one at the end of a sofa, matched to the arm height at 22 to 26 inches and usually 18 to 24 inches square, often with a drawer or a shelf. A side table is the looser term for any small table beside a seat, including C-shaped tables that slide over the sofa, pedestal tables at 14 to 18 inches across, and nesting sets. In practice: every end table is a side table; not every side table works as an end table. Buy on height matched to the arm and top area, and ignore which word the listing used.
Side table vs end table: what the words actually mean
- End table — a specific position: the end of a sofa or between two chairs. Sized to the arm, 22 to 26 inches tall, 18 to 24 across, usually with storage.
- Side table — a category: anything small beside a seat. Covers end tables, C-tables, pedestals, drum tables, nesting sets and perch tables.
- Accent table — a third term, used when the piece is chosen for looks rather than function.
So the useful question is never which name a listing used. It is whether the piece does an end table’s job: a surface at arm height, big enough for a lamp and a drink, stable enough not to tip.
A 14-inch pedestal side table is charming and will not take a lamp and a mug at once. A 22-inch end table with a drawer will, and looks heavier in the room. Both are sold under both names.

Height is the one that decides it
Whatever the name, the piece has to land within 2 inches of the sofa arm, and preferably just below it. That is the test any candidate passes or fails, and it is worked through in how tall a side table should be.
Where the names do carry information: end tables are built at 22 to 26 inches because that is where sofa arms sit, while C-tables are built at 24 to 28 because they have to clear the seat cushion they slide over. Pick the wrong category and the height is wrong before you start.
A quick check for an armless sofa or a chaise: seat height plus 4 to 6 inches.
Top area, which is the second test
Ask what the surface has to hold, then work out whether it fits.
A lamp alone: 12 to 14 inches across is enough, and a pedestal works.
A lamp and a drink: 16 to 18 inches minimum, or the drink ends up on the edge.
A lamp, a drink, a book and a remote: 20 to 24 inches, and now you want a proper end table, ideally with a drawer so the remotes go away.
A laptop or a plate: a C-table that slides over the sofa seat beats any freestanding table, because it puts the surface over your lap rather than beside your hip.
Round tops lose about a fifth of the usable area against a square of the same nominal size, but they suit tight walkways because there is no corner to catch a hip.
Stability, and the lamp problem
A tall lamp on a narrow pedestal is the commonest tipping hazard in a sitting room, and it is worse than it looks because the cable gets caught by feet and pulls sideways.
Three things to check if a lamp is going on it:
- Base diameter against lamp height. A 60-inch-tall lamp on a 14-inch pedestal is marginal. Wider base, or a heavier table.
- Table weight. Solid timber at 15 to 25 lb resists a knock; a hollow-core table at 6 lb does not.
- Cable route. Run it behind the table leg and along the skirting, not across the walkway.

Which to buy
Buy an end table when it sits at the end of a sofa and has to hold a lamp plus the things people put down. Twenty to 24 inches across, arm height, and a drawer if you can get one.
Buy a smaller side table when it is for a drink beside an armchair, when the walkway is tight, or when you want two that can move around the room.
Buy a C-table when the job is a laptop or a plate, because nothing freestanding does that as well.
Buy a nesting pair when guests come often and the second surface is only needed sometimes.
