Comparison card for how tall should a side table be: Height that works — Matches the arm within 2 in; Slightly below the arm, not above; Measured from the sofa you own. Height that does not — A "standard" number from a listing; Above the arm, glass lifted over a lip; Seat height used as the reference.

How tall should a side table be? Level with the arm of the sofa it sits beside, give or take 2 inches — which for most sofas means 22 to 26 inches.

There is no standard side table height, because there is no standard sofa arm. Measure yours.

Short answer

Match the top of the sofa arm, within 2 inches either way. Common results: a low mid-century sofa with a 20-inch arm wants a 18 to 22-inch table; a standard sofa with a 24-inch arm wants 22 to 26; a high-armed traditional sofa at 28 wants 26 to 30. For an armless sofa or a chaise, match the seat height plus 4 to 6 inches, which usually lands at 22 to 24. A table slightly below the arm always beats one above it — you set a glass down by feel, and a lip you have to lift over is what gets knocked.

How tall should a side table be next to each seat

  • Low mid-century sofa, arm 18 to 20 in: table 18 to 22.
  • Standard sofa, arm 22 to 25: table 22 to 26.
  • Traditional high-arm sofa, arm 26 to 28: table 26 to 30.
  • Armless sofa or chaise, seat 17 to 19: table 22 to 24.
  • Armchair, arm 24 to 26: table 24 to 26.

Two things follow. First, “side table height” spans a whole foot, so any listing that calls a fixed number “standard” is guessing. Second, the reference point is the arm, not the seat and not the room — which is why a table that looked right in a showroom often looks wrong at home.

The equivalent rule for the table in front of the sofa is a different one entirely — coffee table dimensions.

A side elevation of a sofa and a side table. The sofa arm is twenty-four inches from the floor and the side table top is twenty-three inches, one inch below the arm, which is the comfortable relationship. A dashed line marks the two inch tolerance either side of the arm height.arm 24 intable 23 in+2 in-2 in

Why slightly low beats slightly high

You do not look at a side table when you use it. You reach sideways, holding a full glass, and put it down by feel.

If the top is below the arm, your hand travels along the arm and then down onto the surface. It works blind.

If the top is above the arm, you have to lift the glass over a lip you cannot see. That is how drinks get knocked, and it is why a table two inches too tall feels much worse than one two inches too short.

So when you are between sizes, take the shorter one. The only exception is a table used mainly for a lamp rather than a drink, where a taller top puts the shade at a better height for reading.

What the table is for changes the number

For drinks and a phone: arm height or 1 to 2 inches below. The default.

For a reading lamp: you want the bottom of the shade roughly at eye level when seated, which is about 40 to 42 inches from the floor. Work backwards from your lamp’s height to the table. A tall thin lamp on a low table often beats a short lamp on a tall one.

For a laptop or a plate: closer to 26 to 28 inches, which is near dining height. A C-shaped table that slides over the sofa seat does this better than any freestanding one.

Beside a bed: a different rule entirely — level with the top of the mattress, per nightstand height. A side table used as a nightstand is usually too short for a modern tall mattress, which is the main argument in nightstand against side table.

Two columns. A height that works matches the sofa arm within two inches, sits slightly below rather than above it, and is chosen from the arm you actually own. A height that does not follows a standard number from a listing, sits above the arm so drinks must be lifted over a lip, and uses seat height instead of arm height as the reference.Height that worksMatches the arm within 2 inSlightly below the arm, not aboveMeasured from the sofa you ownHeight that does notA “standard” number from a listingAbove the arm, glass lifted over a lipSeat height used as the reference

Height is not the only fit

Width and depth. A side table wants to be roughly as deep as the sofa arm is wide, so it does not stick out into the walkway. Fourteen to 20 inches suits most sofas; anything over 24 starts to read as a small console.

Clearance to the sofa. Two to four inches, for the same reason as a nightstand beside a bed — upholstery scuffs and dust collects in a one-inch gap.

Leg position. A pedestal or a C-shaped base lets you get your feet and the sofa’s own leg close. Four splayed legs often clash with the sofa foot and force the table further out than you wanted.

Timber and finish. A side table takes wet glasses daily, so the finish matters more than on most furniture — best finish for a solid wood table top and how to remove water rings.

A related detail that is easy to miss: leave 2 to 4 inches between the table and the sofa, rather than pushing it tight. Upholstery and timber rub against each other every time someone sits down, the fabric pills, and a one-inch gap collects everything that falls off the arm. It is the same reasoning as the gap beside a bed, and the same mistake gets made in both rooms.

Getting the height right

  • Tape measure Floor to the top of the sofa arm, before anything else
  • Coasters A side table takes more wet glasses than any other surface in the house
  • Furniture levellers A side table that rocks spills what is on it
  • Hardwax oil Renews a top that has taken rings and marks

Questions we get asked

How tall should a side table be?

Level with the sofa arm within 2 inches, which for most sofas means 22 to 26 inches.

Is there a standard height?

No, because there is no standard sofa arm. The range runs from 18 to 30 inches.

Should it be taller or shorter than the arm?

Shorter. You set a glass down by feel, and a lip above the arm is what gets knocked.

What about an armless sofa?

Use seat height plus 4 to 6 inches, which usually lands at 22 to 24.

What height for a reading lamp?

Work backwards so the bottom of the shade sits about 40 to 42 inches from the floor when you are seated.

Can I use a side table beside the bed?

Only if it reaches the top of the mattress. Most are too short for a modern tall mattress.
