Editorial Policy

This site exists to answer narrow, practical questions about solid wood furniture: what has gone wrong with a piece, which part fits it, which species is worth paying for, and what measures up before you buy. This page sets out the rules we hold ourselves to.

Numbers come with a source

Every dimension, hardness figure and material spec on this site is taken from a manufacturer’s spec sheet or from a published reference such as The Wood Database or the USDA Forest Products Laboratory — and the source is named on the page. We do not estimate a Janka rating, a board thickness or a seat clearance. An uncited number is worse than no number, because a wrong measurement wastes a reader’s afternoon or their money.

We say what is wrong with things

Any comparison between a designer piece and a cheaper look-alike has to state where the cheaper one falls short. Solid wood becoming veneer, 25 mm slats becoming 18 mm, joinery becoming bolts — that is the interesting part, and leaving it out would make the page an advert.

Repair before replacement

Where a piece can be fixed, we lead with the fix. A wobbly table usually needs a re-glued joint, not a new table. That order is deliberate, even though a repair earns us far less than a replacement.

Corrections

When we get something wrong we correct the page itself rather than quietly deleting it, and the revision date shown at the top of the article changes. If you find an error — especially a measurement — please tell us.
