6 drawer vs 9 drawer dresser looks like a question about capacity. It is not — at the same external size, the two hold almost exactly the same volume.
What changes is how that volume is divided, how wide each drawer is, and how heavy each one gets when it is full.
At the same width and height, a 9 drawer and a 6 drawer hold within about 5% of each other — the 9 loses a little to two extra drawer bottoms and dividers. The real differences: a 9 drawer is usually three columns wide, so each drawer is 18 to 21 inches across instead of 28 to 32, which makes them lighter to pull and easier to sort but too narrow for folded bed linen or a stack of jumpers. A 6 drawer gives fewer, wider, deeper drawers that hold bulky things but get heavy. Sort by what you store, not by the number.

What the wide drawer does that the narrow one cannot
A 28 to 32-inch drawer takes things that are simply too big for an 18-inch one:
- Folded bed linen. A folded queen flat sheet is about 14 × 20 inches. It fits a wide drawer flat and has to be folded again for a narrow one.
- Stacks of jumpers side by side, so you can see two piles at once.
- Anything long — a rolled belt run, a folded throw, a bag.

What the narrow drawer does better

The runners, which is where the count actually matters
