Comparison card for how tall should a vanity be: Vanity that works — 29 to 30 in top for seated use; 24 to 26 in of knee clearance kept; 11 to 12 in from stool seat to top. Vanity that does not — Bathroom height used for sitting; Centre drawer eating the knee space; Stool too tall, elbows above the top.

How tall should a vanity be? A bedroom or makeup vanity should be 29 to 30 inches to the top — the same as a desk, and 4 to 6 inches lower than the bathroom vanity people confuse it with.

Getting these two mixed up is the single commonest vanity mistake.

Short answer

A makeup or bedroom vanity is 29 to 30 inches high, because you sit at it — which needs an 18-inch stool and 24 to 26 inches of knee clearance underneath. A bathroom vanity is 32 to 36 inches, because you stand at it, and 36 is the modern comfort-height standard. A vanity built at bathroom height with a stool leaves your shoulders hunched and your elbows above the top. If yours is too tall, the fix is the stool, not the table: a 24 to 26-inch stool restores the working relationship.

How tall should a vanity be, by type

  • Makeup or bedroom vanity, seated: 29 to 30 inches.
  • Vanity desk doubling as a workspace: 29 to 30, identical to a desk.
  • Bathroom vanity, standard: 30 to 32 inches — the older height, and still common.
  • Bathroom vanity, comfort height: 34 to 36 inches, which is what most new installations use.
  • Vessel-sink bathroom vanity: 30 to 32 inches of cabinet, because the bowl adds 5 or 6 on top.

The seated heights come from the same arithmetic as every other seated surface: an 18-inch seat, roughly 11 inches of clearance to the underside, and the top a little above that. It is exactly how a desk is sized — how tall a desk should be.

Two side elevations. A seated makeup vanity at twenty-nine inches with an eighteen inch stool and twenty-five inches of knee clearance underneath. The three numbers under the top

A seated vanity fails or works on what is underneath it, not on the surface height alone.

Knee clearance: 24 to 26 inches from the floor to the underside. A drawer slung under the centre of the top eats this, and a vanity with a 4-inch centre drawer at 29 inches high leaves 25 — just workable. At 3 inches of drawer and 28 of height it is not.

Knee depth: at least 18 inches of unobstructed space front to back. Vanities pushed against a wall with a plinth or a back rail at knee level fail here even when the height is right.

Knee width: 24 inches minimum between the pedestals, and 28 is better. Two banks of drawers with a narrow gap between them is the arrangement that looks best and sits worst.

The same three constraints govern desks, and the detail is in desk with drawers against without.

Matching the stool

The relationship that matters is 11 to 12 inches between the stool seat and the vanity top.

At a 29-inch vanity, that means an 17 to 18-inch stool. At a 30-inch vanity, 18 to 19.

Where people go wrong is buying the stool that comes with the vanity without checking. Vanity stools are sold at everything from 16 to 24 inches, and a 22-inch stool at a 29-inch vanity leaves 7 inches — your elbows end up above the top and your shoulders hunch.

Two useful consequences:

  1. If the vanity is too tall and cannot be changed, buy a taller stool. A 24 to 26-inch stool at a 36-inch bathroom-height vanity restores the 11-inch relationship — the heights are in how tall a bar stool should be.
  2. If the vanity is too short, you cannot fix it with the stool, because you will run out of knee clearance. Raising the vanity on leg extenders is the only real route.
Two columns. A vanity that works is twenty-nine to thirty inches high, keeps twenty-four to twenty-six inches of knee clearance and leaves eleven to twelve inches between the stool seat and the top. One that does not is built at bathroom height for seated use, has a centre drawer eating the knee space, and comes with a stool too tall for it.Vanity that works29 to 30 in top for seated use24 to 26 in of knee clearance kept11 to 12 in from stool seat to topVanity that does notBathroom height used for sittingCentre drawer eating the knee spaceStool too tall, elbows above the top
A too-tall vanity is fixable with a taller stool. A too-short one is not fixable at all.

Checks before buying

  1. Confirm which kind you are buying. Listings say “vanity” for both. A height of 29 to 30 is seated; 32 to 36 is standing.
  2. Ask for the knee clearance, not just the top height. It is the number that decides whether you can sit at it.
  3. Measure the mirror position. The centre of a seated mirror wants to be around 48 to 52 inches from the floor, which is eye height sitting.
  4. Check the top depth. Sixteen to 20 inches is normal for a makeup vanity; under 14 and the drawers will not hold anything useful.
  5. Look at the drawer depth if it is doubling as storage, per how deep a dresser drawer should be.

Width is the other decision and it is driven by the wall rather than by you — how wide a vanity should be. If the piece is also a desk, check how much weight a desk can hold before putting a monitor on it.

Lighting height goes with the vanity height, and getting it wrong undoes the rest. Side lights should sit at roughly eye level when seated, which is 44 to 48 inches from the floor at a 29-inch vanity, and they should be either side of the mirror rather than above it. A single light overhead throws shadows down into the eye sockets and under the chin, which is exactly where you do not want them. Two sources at face height, 24 to 36 inches apart, is the arrangement that works.

Getting the height right

  • Tape measure Floor to the underside, not just floor to the top
  • Vanity stool Aim for 11 to 12 inches between the seat and the vanity top
  • Furniture leg extenders The only real fix for a vanity that is too short
  • Adhesive LED strip light A low vanity throws shadows upward without one

What to buy

For the width, see how wide a vanity should be. For the seated-surface logic generally, how tall a desk should be.

Questions we get asked

How tall should a vanity be?

Twenty-nine to 30 inches for a seated makeup vanity, and 32 to 36 for a bathroom vanity you stand at.

Why is a bathroom vanity taller?

Because you stand at it. Thirty-four to 36 inches is the comfort-height standard for standing use.

How much knee clearance do I need?

Twenty-four to 26 inches from the floor to the underside, 18 inches deep and 24 inches wide.

What height stool goes with a vanity?

One that leaves 11 to 12 inches between the seat and the top, so 17 to 18 inches at a 29-inch vanity.

My vanity is too tall — what can I do?

Buy a taller stool. A 24 to 26-inch stool restores the working relationship at a 36-inch top.

Can a vanity be a desk?

Yes, if it is 29 to 30 inches with real knee clearance. The heights are identical.
