Outdoor sofa vs loveseat is a decision about one seat — and about whether that seat is worth roughly two feet of patio you cannot get back.

The two are the same product at two lengths. What changes is not comfort but how much of the terrace the seating group swallows, and whether anyone can lie down on it.

Short answer

An outdoor loveseat is 48 to 58 inches wide and seats two. An outdoor sofa is 72 to 84 inches and seats three. Allow 24 inches of seat width per adult either way. The sofa buys you the third seat and the ability to lie down; it costs about 2 feet of wall, roughly 40% more weight to move for winter, and a cushion set that is half again as expensive to replace. Both are 32 to 40 inches deep, which is the dimension that actually decides whether the group fits. On a patio under 12 feet wide, two loveseats at right angles usually beat one sofa.

Outdoor sofa vs loveseat: the width arithmetic

Allow 24 inches of seat width per adult — the same figure as indoors and the same as a dining chair.

48-inch loveseat: two adults, snug. Arms eat into it.
54 to 58-inch loveseat: two adults comfortably, or two plus a child.
72-inch sofa: three adults at 24 inches each, which is the honest minimum.
84-inch sofa: three with room, or two lying at an angle.

The catch outdoors is that arms are wider than indoors. Outdoor frames use chunky timber sections for weather resistance, so a 6 to 8-inch arm each side is common against 3 to 4 inside. On a 48-inch loveseat that leaves 32 to 36 inches of actual seat — a seat and a half.

The arms are a fixed cost. On a short loveseat they take a third of the width.

Depth is the dimension that decides the layout

Both are 32 to 40 inches deep, and that is far deeper than most people picture. An outdoor sofa is not a 22-inch dining bench; it is closer to a bed in plan.

Which means:

Against a wall: the seating group’s footprint is 40 inches before anyone sits.
Plus a coffee table at 14 to 18 inches away, and the table’s own 20 inches, you are at 78 inches from the wall.
Plus a walkway at 30 inches on the far side: 9 feet of patio depth for one sofa and a table.

Two loveseats or one sofa

This is the real choice on most patios, and the loveseats usually win.

Two loveseats at right angles seat four, define a corner, and let you put the pair in an L that follows the shape of a terrace. Each one is light enough for two people to move, and if the layout changes you rearrange rather than start again.

One sofa plus two chairs seats five and anchors one wall. It reads more like a room, and the sofa is the only piece anyone can lie on — which for a sunny terrace is not a small thing.

The deciding question is whether you ever want to lie down outside. If yes, you need 78 inches or more, which no loveseat gives you. If no, two loveseats are more flexible for the same money.

Do you want to lie down outside? That question decides it more cleanly than the seat count.

Cushions, which scale with the length

This is the running cost people do not price in.

A loveseat needs two seat cushions and two backs; a sofa needs three and three. Outdoor cushions fade and flatten in two to four seasons while the frame lasts a decade or more, so you will buy them two or three times over the life of the furniture.

Two things to check on the listing: whether cushions are included at the photographed price, and whether the covers are removable for washing. Both are frequently not.

Frame and fixings, which matter more at sofa length

Back and seat rails. A 72-inch sofa has a long unsupported span under the cushions. Look for a centre leg or a mid-span rail — without one, the middle seat sinks within a couple of seasons.
Bolted joints. A sofa racks along its length every time somebody drops into one end. Bolts can be pulled up annually; screws into end grain cannot.
Slatted deck under the cushions, so water drains rather than sitting between the cushion and the frame. This is where outdoor sofas rot.
Stainless fixings. A long frame has many of them, and plain steel streaks rust down every one.
Feet off the ground. Caps or a plinth — legs standing in water on paving go first.
