Wood dressers — What separates one that lasts from one that racks

A dresser is the one piece of bedroom furniture that gets operated. A bed is slept in; a dresser is pulled, loaded, slammed and pulled again, thousands of times, with twenty pounds of clothing hanging off a drawer that is cantilevered out into the room.

Everything that fails on a dresser fails because of that. Which means the drawers — not the carcase, not the finish — are where to look first.

Short answer

Judge a dresser on four things, in this order. 1. Drawer box joints: dovetails at the front corners are the benchmark; dowels and screws are acceptable; staples into particleboard are not. 2. Drawer bottoms: a panel captured in a groove on all four sides, not a thin sheet stapled underneath. 3. Runners: full-extension steel slides beat wooden runners for smoothness; either beats a plastic centre rail. 4. Carcase: solid or plywood sides hold a screw; particleboard sides strip where the runners mount. Everything else — finish, handles, style — is preference.

1. The drawer box joints

Every time a loaded drawer is pulled, the front tries to separate from the sides. That is the joint that decides how long the dresser lasts.

Dovetails — interlocking wedge-shaped fingers — resist that pull mechanically, not just with glue. They are the benchmark, and they are visible on the drawer side as soon as you open it. Machine-cut dovetails are as strong as hand-cut ones; the difference is only cosmetic.

Dowelled or biscuit joints rely on glue plus alignment pins. Perfectly adequate on a well-made drawer, especially for a dresser that will not be moved often.

Screwed butt joints work if the material holds a screw. In solid timber or plywood they do; in particleboard they loosen.

Stapled butt joints into particleboard are the bottom of the market. They hold until they do not, and there is no repair that lasts.

Every dresser fails at the drawer. Judge it there before anything else.

2. The drawer bottom

The bottom carries the weight. There are two ways of fitting it, and they behave completely differently under load.

Captured in a groove on all four sides: the panel floats in a slot routed into the drawer sides, so the load transfers into the box structure. This is how a drawer should be built.

Stapled or pinned underneath: a thin sheet fixed to the bottom edges of the sides. The staples carry the weight in shear, and over a few years of loaded use they pull through. The symptom is a drawer bottom that bows down in the middle, then drops out of one corner.

A three-millimetre sheet in a groove is better than a six-millimetre sheet stapled on. It is the fixing, not the thickness.

3. The runners

How the drawer travels decides how it feels every day, and how much of the drawer you can actually reach.

Full extension matters more than people expect. On a three-quarter slide the back four or five inches of the drawer never come clear of the case, which is exactly where things get lost.

Also check the stated load rating and whether the slides are bottom-mounted or side-mounted. Side-mounted slides carry more and resist racking better; bottom-mounted ones are hidden, which looks cleaner, and generally carry less.

4. The carcase

The case matters most where the runners bolt to it, because every pull of a loaded drawer tries to pull those screws out sideways.

Solid timber and plywood hold a screw indefinitely. Particleboard enlarges the hole, the runner develops play, the drawer starts to rack, and the racking accelerates the wear. Once that has started there is no clean repair.

Two more carcase details worth thirty seconds:

  • A back panel that is fixed all round, not just tacked at the corners. The back is what stops the case racking into a parallelogram.
  • Dust panels between drawers — thin horizontal panels separating each drawer bay. Traditional, uncommon now, and a reliable sign of a well-built case.

The thing that is not optional: anchoring it

A dresser with its top drawers open has its centre of gravity out in front of the case. A child pulling on an open drawer, or climbing it, can tip it over. This is a well-documented cause of serious injury, and it is entirely preventable.

Every dresser should be anchored to the wall with the strap or bracket supplied, into a stud. Do it on the day it is assembled, not later. If the dresser did not come with an anchor kit, buy one — they cost very little.

Size and layout

A standard dresser is 30 to 36 inches tall and 50 to 65 inches wide — low and wide, often used under a mirror or a television. A chest of drawers is the tall narrow version, 40 to 55 inches tall and 30 to 40 wide, with the same construction questions.

Drawer depth is worth checking against what you store. Shallow top drawers suit socks and underwear; a deep bottom drawer takes jumpers. A dresser with six identical medium drawers is less useful than one with a mix, even at the same total volume.

Allow about 36 inches of clear floor in front so a drawer can open fully with somebody standing at it.

Are dovetail drawers worth it?
