What wood is best for furniture — By the job, not by a ranking

There is no best wood for furniture, and any list that ranks them is answering a different question from the one you are asking. Oak is not better than walnut; it is harder and cheaper and louder-grained. Which of those you want depends on what the piece has to do.
So here are the timbers you will actually meet, sorted by the job rather than by a score.
Pick by the job. Surfaces that take wear — dining tables, desks, coffee tables: oak, maple or acacia, all hard enough to resist dents. Frames and structure — beds, chairs, cabinet carcases: almost any hardwood works, so buy on section size and joinery instead; rubberwood and pine are fine here and much cheaper. Pieces bought for their looks — sideboards, bed frames, consoles: walnut, cherry or mango. Outdoors: teak, or acacia with yearly oiling. Species matters less than whether the load points are solid.

Janka measures resistance to a point load — a dropped fork, a dragged lamp base. It predicts denting and nothing else. It says nothing about water rings, scratches in the finish, or how a timber ages.
Match the timber to the job
Work surfaces: hardness matters
Dining tables, desks, coffee tables. These take point loads daily, so start at oak (1,290) and go up. Maple and acacia are harder again. Below about 1,000 — walnut, cherry, mango, pine — expect dents from ordinary use.
Coffee tables are the hardest case of all, because feet and grit get involved; that one is covered in hardwood coffee tables.
Frames: hardness barely matters
Bed frames, chair frames, cabinet carcases. Nothing abrades them. What matters is stiffness per inch of section and screw-holding, and every hardwood in the table does both adequately.
So on a bed frame, a generously sized pine or rubberwood frame outperforms a thin oak one — and costs half as much. Read the section dimensions before the species name. The full argument is in hardwood bed frames at queen size.
Show pieces: buy the colour
Sideboards, consoles, bed frames, anything where you are buying the look. Walnut, cherry and mango are chosen for colour and figure, and their lower hardness rarely matters on a piece nobody eats off.
Be aware they age in different directions: cherry darkens dramatically, oak ambers, walnut lightens under UV. Anything left sitting on the surface leaves a permanent outline either way — see walnut against oak.
Outdoors: oil content, not hardness
Teak survives decades untreated because of its very high natural oil and silica. Acacia is harder but has less oil, so it needs yearly maintenance. Everything else in the table is indoor timber. See best wood to use outside.
The question that matters more than species
Where the solid timber is. A dresser in “solid oak” with stapled drawer boxes is worse than a panel dresser with dovetailed drawer boxes and steel slides.
Three places carry load in almost any piece of furniture:
- Where fixings go — rail-to-post joints, runner mounts, hinge mounts. Solid timber or plywood holds a screw indefinitely; particleboard enlarges its hole and cannot be cleanly repaired.
- Spans — shelves, slats, table rails. Stiffness rises with the cube of depth, so section size beats species by a wide margin.
- Wide flat panels — table tops, doors. Here engineered panel is often the better choice, because a wide solid panel moves seasonally and can cup or split.

Softwood is not a disqualification
Hardwood and softwood are botanical categories, not hardness ratings. Balsa is a hardwood; yew is a softwood and harder than several hardwoods.
Pine is genuinely soft and will dent — but on a painted piece, a bed frame or a child’s furniture that will be outgrown, that is often an acceptable trade for half the price. Pine is also the easiest timber to sand and refinish, so its damage is the most reversible.
Colour, and the fact that it does not stay put
Every timber changes colour, and most people choose one without knowing which direction it will move. Over five years the difference is obvious.
- Cherry darkens most dramatically of all, going from pale pink-brown to a deep reddish brown. This is the timber’s main attraction to people who know it and a surprise to people who do not.
- Oak ambers, moving from pale gold toward warm honey.
- Maple and birch yellow slightly, which is why they are so often finished with a water-based lacquer that slows it.
- Walnut lightens under UV, losing some of its purple-grey depth. The opposite of what almost everyone expects.
- Teak and acacia outdoors go silver-grey, which is a surface layer and sands back.
The practical consequence is the same in every case: anything left sitting on the surface leaves a permanent outline. A tray on oak leaves a pale patch; a tray on walnut leaves a dark one. In a sunny room, either move objects around occasionally or accept the pattern. No finish prevents it, and UV filters only slow it.
So if two pieces need to match, buy them at the same time and expose them to the same light. Buying a matching nightstand two years later rarely matches.
Finish decides more than you think
Most complaints about a timber are complaints about its finish. Water rings, heat marks and light scratches all happen in the finish film, not the wood.
Lacquer resists more and cannot be spot-repaired. Oil marks more easily and can be fixed by anybody with a cloth in ten minutes. On a piece that will be used hard for years, repairability usually wins — which is why the same oak table can be a joy or a frustration depending on how it was finished.
