Engineered hardwood is usually described as the cheaper option, and at the checkout it often is. But the gap is much narrower than people expect, and at the top of the range engineered costs more than solid.
That sounds contradictory until you look at what you are actually paying for, which is not the same thing in each case.
On furniture, engineered panel is usually cheaper — a veneered top costs less than the same top in solid timber because it uses a fraction of the expensive wood. The saving is largest on wide surfaces (table tops, wardrobe doors) and small or nil on narrow parts (rails, legs, frames), where there is little timber to save. The exception: thick-wear-layer engineered and premium veneers on plywood cores can cost more than solid, because the core and the pressing are not cheap. Cost is the wrong question anyway — refinishability is what actually differs.
Where the saving is, and where it is not

Read the pattern: the saving tracks surface area. A veneer is a thin skin over a cheap core, so the bigger the flat area, the more expensive timber it displaces.
On a chair or a bed frame, which is mostly narrow sticks, there is almost nothing to save — which is why solid timber frames are common at every price and veneered ones are not.
Why engineered can cost more
Three cases where the cheaper option is the solid one.
Premium veneer on a plywood core. Good birch plywood is not cheap, and a thick sliced veneer in a figured timber can cost more per square foot than plain solid stock. This is how high-end furniture is built, and it is not a cost saving — it is chosen for stability.
Rare or figured species. Burr walnut, crotch mahogany, book-matched figure. These only exist as veneer, because the timber does not come in usable solid boards. You are paying for the figure, and there is no solid alternative at any price.
Curved components. A curved solid part is cut from thick stock and wastes most of it, or is steam-bent. A curved laminated part is pressed from thin layers and is both cheaper and stronger. Here engineered wins on both counts.
The honest comparison: what the money buys
Price is the wrong axis. Here is what actually differs.
Solid timber buys refinishability
A full-thickness solid top can be sanded back and refinished as many times as its thickness allows — realistically five or six times over decades. That single property is why a solid dining table survives a family and a veneered one usually does not.
Engineered buys flatness
A wide solid panel shrinks and swells across the grain with humidity, and can cup or split if it is not free to move. An engineered panel barely moves at all. On a wide door, a wide top, or anything that must stay dead flat, engineered is the better engineering rather than the cheaper compromise.
Both hold a screw, but not equally
Plywood holds a fixing as well as solid timber. MDF holds moderately in the face and poorly in the edge. Particleboard enlarges its hole under repeated load and cannot be cleanly repaired — which is why it is the wrong material at a load point, whatever it costs. The distinctions are in what engineered wood actually is.
Comparing two listings fairly
A solid table at $600 and a veneered one at $400 are not the same purchase, so comparing the numbers directly tells you little. Three checks make it a fair comparison.
- Where is the solid part? “Solid wood legs” on a $400 table means the top is panel. “Solid wood top” means the money went where it matters.
- What is the core? Veneer on plywood is a different product from veneer on particleboard, and listings usually say which. Plywood is worth real money.
- What is the shipping weight? Solid timber is heavy. A 72-inch dining table in solid hardwood is typically 120 to 180 lb; the same in veneered panel is 70 to 110. This test catches most overclaiming, and the figure is nearly always listed.

Cost over time, not at the checkout
A useful way to think about it: divide the price by the number of refinishes the piece can take.
A solid oak table at $800 that can be sanded back five times has a very long usable life. A veneered table at $500 that can be refinished once, carefully, is a shorter-lived object. Whether that matters depends entirely on whether you intend to keep it for twenty years or five.
For a rental, a first flat, or a fast-changing room, the veneered piece can be the more sensible buy. For a dining table that is meant to become the family’s table, it is not.

Most search results for this question are about flooring, where the economics differ: engineered flooring is often priced at or above solid because of the plywood core and the click-fit machining, and it is chosen for stability over underfloor heating rather than for price.
