Every folding Murphy bed has a mechanism that carries the weight of the mattress so you do not have to. There are two ways of doing it — gas pistons and torsion springs — and the choice between them is the single biggest functional difference between two beds that look identical in a photograph.
It is also the part that ages. A cabinet that is looked after will outlast the person who bought it; the lift mechanism is a wear component, and knowing which kind you are buying tells you how it will wear.
Gas pistons are sealed cylinders that push as they extend. They feel smooth from day one, need no setup, and fail gradually and replaceably — the bed gets heavier to lift over years and you swap the cylinders. Torsion springs are steel bars wound under tension. They are cheaper, adjustable at installation to suit your mattress weight, and can be re-tensioned rather than replaced, but they must be set up correctly or the bed either slams or refuses to stay shut. For most buyers pistons are the easier life; springs are the better economics if you are comfortable adjusting them.
What the mechanism is actually doing
A queen mattress weighs somewhere between 60 and 120 pounds, and the platform adds more. Lifted at arm’s length from a standing start, that is a genuine load. The mechanism’s job is to store energy when the bed comes down and give it back when the bed goes up, so the force you apply stays roughly constant and modest through the whole arc.
It also has to hold the bed closed against gravity, and hold it open against nothing. Both ends of the travel matter, and a mechanism that is wrong for the mattress fails at one end or the other: too weak and the bed drifts open, too strong and it will not stay down.
That is why every cabinet states a mattress weight range as well as a thickness limit. It is not marketing; it is the operating envelope of the lift.
Gas pistons in practice
A gas strut is a sealed cylinder of nitrogen with a piston in it. Compress it and it pushes back; the force is nearly constant across the stroke, which is exactly the characteristic you want.
What is good. The motion is smooth and predictable from the first day. There is nothing to adjust on installation. Better beds let you specify or swap the strut rating to match a heavier or lighter mattress. When a strut does weaken, the bed simply becomes harder to lift — there is no sudden failure.
What is not. Struts lose gas slowly, and in a bed used daily you might notice a change somewhere between five and ten years in. They are consumables, and replacements cost real money. Cold rooms make them temporarily stiffer, which is a genuine nuisance in an unheated guest room. They also cost more to build in, which is part of why piston beds sit higher up the price list.
Torsion springs in practice
A torsion spring is a steel bar twisted along its length. Winding it up at installation stores the energy; the bed unwinds it as it comes down.
What is good. Cheaper, and more tunable: most systems let you add or remove turns, and some let you add or remove springs entirely. That means one design covers a wide range of mattress weights, and it means you can re-tension later if you change the mattress. They do not care about cold. They last a long time when correctly set.
What is not. Setup is the whole game. Winding a torsion bar involves a bar in a socket and a lot of stored energy, and doing it wrong is both dangerous and the usual cause of a bed that slams down or springs up. Over years the tension relaxes and the bed’s character changes — recoverable, but only if you are willing to go back and adjust it.

Which one to choose
- Buy pistons if the bed is for guests and you want to forget about it. No setup, no adjustment, and years of doing nothing before it needs attention.
- Buy pistons if the room is cold or the users are not strong. Predictable force matters most to whoever finds the bed hardest to lift.
- Buy springs if price is the binding constraint and you are content to follow the tensioning instructions properly, or to have the installer do it.
- Buy springs if your mattress is unusual. A very light or very heavy mattress is easier to accommodate with adjustable tension than with a fixed strut.
What should not drive the decision is which one sounds more modern. Both are mature, both work, and a good spring bed is far better than a cheap piston bed.
The mattress is part of the mechanism
This is the point people skip. The lift is tuned to a weight range, so the mattress is not a free choice made afterwards — it is a component.
Two limits appear on every listing. Thickness, because the mattress folds into the case with the bedding on it. Weight, because that is what the mechanism is balancing. A modern pillow-top can breach both at once.
Buy the cabinet, read both numbers, then buy the mattress. Doing it the other way round is the most common expensive mistake in the whole category, and the only fix is a different mattress.
What the cabinet has to do about it
The mechanism does not bolt to the wall. It bolts to the cabinet, and the cabinet bolts to the wall — so every lift cycle puts force through the fixing points in the case itself.
Solid timber and plywood hold a screw and keep holding it. Particleboard enlarges its hole under repeated load, and once a load point is loose there is no clean repair. Most cabinets at ordinary prices use engineered panel somewhere, which is fine when the load points are reinforced with hardwood blocking or steel plates. Look for that reinforcement in the specification, and read the material vocabulary in what engineered wood actually is.
The wall side is not optional either: studs, manufacturer’s fixings, manufacturer’s points. The mechanism turns the mattress into a lever, and a lever finds the weakest anchor.
